Wayfinding Graphics Behind the Scenes

When a project starts with helping people find their way, you know it’s meant to be.

Hospitals can have more corridors than a castle.  Staff passageways blend into a maze of mechanical rooms, hallways and doors. Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago was contemplating a wayfinding update to improve navigation in their facility. Directional wayfinding simply guides visitors (inside or outside a building) by listing information such as departments, directions and office numbers.

Cardosi Kiper Design Group, a multi-disciplinary design firm, recommended Cushing to collaborate on the project. With consultation from Cardosi-Kiper, colorful imagery provided security, peace of mind and of course, helpful directions!

Once the wayfinding project was complete, attention shifted from interior graphics to an exterior installation.

Stanley Manne, a retired businessman and Chairman of the Manne Family Foundation, expressed interest in supporting Lurie Children’s with a contribution. As an institution that relies on philanthropic support to help serve the healthcare needs of children and families, Lurie Children’s celebrates individuals who support their mission and growth on behalf of the children and families it serves.

To ensure future generations would have an opportunity to know of Mr. Manne’s generosity, the team at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Foundation sought a permanent solution.

Metal fabrication was one idea and the team needed perspective to see if this was feasible. A smaller rendering would be the appropriate first step.

Cushing and Cardosi-Kiper responded with a plan to simulate a proof and provide a clearer picture of the potential output.   The temporary sign made the right impression and the installation was approved.

fulfilled three new signage installations and two kiosks to honor Mr. Manne at two of the hospital’s locations.

Vinyl lettering was used for window logos.  Stainless steel lettering ensured the name of this philanthropist would be recognized for years  to come.

One final element remained: the unveiling. A crowd gathered consisting of Board members, hospital leadership, family and friends of Mr. Manne  and curious pedestrians.  All eyes were on the 32 foot cloth draping, dangling above Chicago Avenue.

Printed by Cushing, it was fashioned with a welcoming Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago handprint and long rope.

There was a buzz in the air: what was underneath?

Shortly after 11:00 a.m., the Cushing team received a signal.
Delicately, the curtain dropped to unveil stainless steel lettering, beaming:
